UTS-ers and the “adventure” to most extreme places on Earth

Do UTS-ers know that: the steepest peak is Mount Thor, Nunavut, Canada; the driest place is Atacama Desert, Chile; the tallest waterfall is Angel Falls, Venezuela; the most isolated place is Tristan da Cunha, United Kingdom whereas the densest city is Manila, Philippines, etc. There are meaningful information that students of class 7.1 researched carefully and then presented them in front of the class. Before participating in online classes in the serious period of COVID-19 pandemic, students of class 7.1 had an “adventure” to the “extreme places on Earth” in their interesting English lessons. Through the class, UTS-ers not only acquired Geography and Science knowledge, but also many English vocabulary about this topic. Not just enquiring the knowledge, UTS-ers also made illustrated models of these landscapes themselves from environmentally-friendly materials, according to the 3R principle: Reuse – Reduce – Recycle. UTS-ers must be enjoying these active and creative classes since there are spaces where UTS-ers can freely learn and be creative in their own ways. Therefore, let’s try to fight the pandemic off together and return to school to learn and play enthusiastically like this!

Learning English with foodscapes!

At UTS, learning English is not just understanding vocabulary or using the grammar properly. Developing creative thinking for students in language lessons is very essential. According to a paper of Cambridge University, creativity is a skill that we must include in our curriculum because it challenges our students to think on a different level and to use parts of their brains that complement critical thinking. In class 6.1, UTS-ers could develop creative thinking through their English classes. They learnt about “foodscape” – a modern art which creates pictures with foods and vegetables. Then they brainstormed, prepared simple materials such as cookies, bread, etc. and created their own products. The final models are combination of creative thinking and excellent craft skill. This is the first step for UTS-ers to form their various thinking and creativity – necessary qualities in the modern world.

Raising UTS-ers’ awareness about cyber-bullying

According to recent reports of Microsoft, about more than 5 of 10 Internet users in Vietnam are related to cyber-bullying. Cyber-bullying left negative consequences for victims and bullies as well. Therefore, educating students carefully and timely about this problem is very essential with rapid growth of social media. With the Life Skills subject of Class 9.1, UTS-ers shared their own thoughts about cyber-bullying in various forms: making short film, designing poster, presenting or making animated cartoon. Each product made by UTS-ers includes a meaningful message to raise awareness about cyber-bullying and limit wrong actions on the Internet. Hope that after this lesson, UTS-ers are equipped with precious soft skills in communicating and behaving with people around them. Let’s build a friendly and lovely UTS community together!
M’Drak Kindergarten: The beginning of dreams

M’Drak Kindergarten: The beginning of dreams

M’Drak is the landscape of thick forests and immense prairies of Dak Lak province. The extreme climate, poor soil, and unequally distributed intellectual level made some disadvantaged areas of M’Drak unable to build schools for children. Be able to learn, play and dream – the simple needs of each child – seemed to be “luxuries” for children of this Central Highlands area. With desire to accompany M’Drak district to lighten dreams and hopes of the kids, Van Lang Education Group and US Vietnam Talent International School participated in the kindergarten project for more than 50 kids at hamlet 4, Cu San commune, M’drac district, Dak Lak province. This is an activity in “Schools in Forgotten Lands” project of IEG Foundation with aim to build and repair degraded old school in isolated highlands in Vietnam. The ground-breaking ceremony has been organized on 26th of March, bringing hopes for a decent and safe school to ensure education quality for innocent and lovely students. We do not expect that the small kindergarten at M’Drak will “change” kids’ lives. We just hope it can meet basic needs of kids – the foundation for comprehensive development – then they can contribute and make their hometown better in the future. We consider contribution and society inspiration are missions of each member in UTS community in particular, and Van Lang family in general. Therefore, not only M’Drak kindergarten, there will be more schools in the forgotten lands to be built to lighten the education dreams of children.

UTS-ers experience dream jobs in the happy city

Today, Vietopia vocational city welcomes the “little residents” – UTS Primary students in an exciting filed trip. This is an activity associated with the April theme “Thinking – Creation” of UTS, to inspire and nurture dreams through career experiencing activities. At Vietopia, which has full utilities and functions as a miniature city, UTS-ers tried whatever career they love, such as programmer, firefighter, doctor, nurse, model, chef, etc. They also have learned to be independent and understand more about the value of working, when trying to work and receiving Vido – a special salary of Vietopia. The value of contribution is also enhanced when children know how to coordinate, interact and help each other. A day of experiential learning has passed, but surely UTS-ers will still remember this exciting field trip for a long time. Now, taking a break to recharge, then we will review memorable memories about this field trip in the next school day.
